Certificate of employment of the Court pharmacist Caspar Neumann (1683-1737) for the maid Maria Elisabeth Danielin (1703-1749)

There had been a court pharmacy in the Berlin Palace since the end of the 16th century. The work reference is one of the few preserved handwritten documents from Caspar Neumann, under whose direction, since 1719, also "various womenfolk" were working in the pharmacy. In the 18th century, it was a common matter for women to give up their employment upon marrying. It is thus not surprising that Maria Elisabeth Danielin ended her service because of her impending marriage and requested a work reference. This highly commending reference indicates that Danielin was very much appreciated by her master. In 1732, Neumann was a witness at the baptism of her first daughter.
