“[…] sciences are never for women […]. For them, only that remains that educates, that humanely enlightens the soul […] and […] makes them the ever new, ever congenial spouse of a worthy man, the pleasure of good society and the governess of good children.” (Vol. 1, p. 165) In 1770, Johann Gottfried Herder (1744–1803) wrote words typical of the time to his fiancée. Even Enlightenment thinkers described women as unsuitable for science. Educated they should be – not learned. In his private life, Herder considered his wife to be sufficiently educated and learned to discuss the content and progress of his writings with her.
