Like the National Socialist festivals themselves, their photographic documentation also served the depiction and selfassurance of all the participants as the »Volksgemeinschaft« (people’s community). Becoming actively involved and being photographed as part of the masses was a central element. Niehoff, for example, photographed individual groups in Berga, who – with handpainted signs and an abundance of large and small flags – affirmed their commit ment to the »German people« and National Socialism. For the panorama picture of the Hitler salute in Fienstedt, the photographer had to move from the left to the right. One also has the impression that the masses had deliberately paused for a moment.
