Counter-gaze
- Object
- Heinz Julius Niehoff
- Molschleben, near Gotha (Ort)
- Pentecost 1930 (date of exposure); ca. 1995 (date of print)
How were the photographies in the Hahne Niehoff Archive taken? What took place outside the camera lens? A boy near a group of girls, included by chance. He suspiciously responds to the camera’s gaze – his counter-gaze disturbs the intended composition of the picture and opens the space for questions about the constructedness of the photographies. The gaze is a comment on the recording situation. It draws attention to the photographer Niehoff, his actions in the field and the decisions and coincidences leading to this photograph.
