Angelic female figures known as genii welcomed visitors at important entrances to the Baroque palace. Holding palm branches and trumpets, they symbolized peace and renown. Their grand gestures and fanfares proclaimed the dignity of the king, who at the time was believed to rule by divine right. The sensual portrayal of the figures with their exposed breasts and legs is reminiscent of the sculptures of ancient and papal Rome, which the artist used as his model.
