This male creature from the realm of fable probably adorned the Renaissance palace that was built here in the sixteenth century. When this structure was converted into a Baroque palace, the masons simply recycled the old stonework. They turned around many of the carved stones and sculpted the reverse side instead. Since Berlin is built on sand, stone suitable for building the palace had to be brought in at great cost and effort from far away. It was much cheaper and quicker to reuse old building materials.
