Tjakamarras Familie gehörte zu den letzten indigenen Australiern, die ihre traditionellen Länder verlassen mussten, und kam 1963 in die von der Regierung errichtete Siedlung Papunya. Dort wurde er Mitbegründer der Malereibewegung. Seine Werke befinden sich heute in vielen inter­nationalen Sammlungen. Tjakamarra spielte auch eine tragende Rolle in der outstation­Bewegung für den Aufbau selbstbestimmter Gemeinden auf traditionellem Land. Bis zu seinem Tod 1994 lebte er auf der outstation Kiwirrkurra.
