Egyptologist Fritz Hintze (1915–1993) led the Humboldt-Universität´s first field-research projects in Sudan. The work of his wife is also being increasingly recognised. The Africologist Ursula Hintze (1918–1989) organised the research trips, and documented them in writing and photographically. She tested out East German-made cameras and films under extreme temperature and light conditions. The portraits of local employees show encounters "at eye level". Their political aim was to document international Friendship of Peoples and an anticolonialist attitude of the GDR.
