Egyptologist Fritz Hintze (1915–1993) led the Humboldt-Universität's first field-research projects in Sudan. The work of his wife is also being increasingly recognised. The Africologist Ursula Hintze (1918–1989) organised the research trips, and documented them in writing and photographically. Diaries document the start and progression of the 1960s work. These historical records are today an important source for studies into Sudan archaeology and the history of science.
