The Hahne Niehoff Archive contains a few strongly over- or underexposed 35 mm films, which show either nothing or only shadowy images. They contradict the task of photo archives: they were suitable neither for image-related research nor as pictorial documentation in publications, exhibitions, etc. Why then were such recordings not rejected, but instead carefully labelled and stored? One answer might be that these photos served as evidence for photographic research work in the field. At the same time, their preservation follows the general logic of collections, which always strive for completeness.
