Images of revolutionary events show that this site, which had been at the centre of political power for centuries, thus became the target of protests and attempts to bring about radical change. In March 1848, citizens fought in the area around the Berlin Palace for a constitution and national unity. After the monarchy ended in November 1918, the palace became the scene of violent clashes about the new political direction. While the East German leadership was celebrating the 40th anniversary of the founding of the state inside the Palace of the Republic in autumn 1989, demonstrators outside were demanding freedom and reforms.
