Before the Buddha attained enlightenment in his last existence, he had to prove his exceptional virtuousness in countless rebirths (sometimes as an animal, sometimes as a human). At the stupas in Pagan, there are countless tiled images of stories from the Buddha's past lives. In the Kanha Jataka, the bodhisattva toils as a zebu for the benefit of his poor mistress.
