The German Academy for Language and Literature awarded Jahn the Translation Prize for 1970. In his acceptance speech, Jahn spoke about the special nature of texts by African authors who do not write in their native tongue: “African poetry written in French is not simply French poetry written by Africans.” According to Jahn, the problem initially consisted in bringing together the "African cultural community" and the "European language community" of the authors – and it was only after that that the actual translation work started. He held that its goal lay in “the restoration of the artwork in the garb of another language”.
