One of the reasons ivory is so special is that it is as rare and valuable as precious metals. But unlike metals it cannot be melted down, which is why existing ivory figures were often reworked. That is what happened to this pyxis, a vessel for storing consecrated hosts. An unknown artist carved one of the Stations of the Cross – the mocking of Jesus – between two scenes of healing miracles, presumably as a critical commentary on the religiosity of their own era.
