For this Iranian beggar dervish, life in poverty and asceticism signified the spiritual path to a life closer to God. His patchwork cloak and the rough woolen cap demonstrate that he renounces the world and gives up his social status. Also the Neo-Persian term darwish refers to being “poor” or “needy”. The beggar dervish always had a horn to announce his arrival and a begging bowl to receive food or other donations.
