Of the few throne seats in European collections, this is the only one that still stands in front of its accompanying screen. Represented on it is the “Paradise of the Daoist Immortals”. Thus, when the Son of Heaven, the emperor, sat in front of the screen, he was symbolically admitted into the realm of the immortals. This majestic ensemble, one of the major works from the imperial workshops, radiates an almost architectural dignity that once must have emanated from such splendid furniture in the former imperial palaces.
