A Parisian ivory carver was commissioned by the Musée de la France d’Outre-mer to produce these two tusks for the International Colonial Exhibition held in the city in 1931. The tusks, halved lengthwise, were intended to show how tusks might best be utilized and which objects could be produced from the various sections.
