Shirt and trousers were basic elements of the outfit of Muslim women from East Turkestan in the 19th century. Le Coq, member of the Turfan expeditions, acquired various leg embroideries from the wives of the village elder of Toksu. Such embroideries decorated the section of trousers just below the shirt. The Chinese influence is particularly striking in the embroidered motifs. In Le Coq's time, embroidered trousers had already been replaced by colourful, printed cotton cloths from Russia.
