The Geissenklösterle cave seems to have been a focal point for musical activity during the Stone Age. Excavations brought to light various flutes, which are the oldest known musical instruments in existence. These were usually carved from birds’ bones, which are naturally hollow. In the example shown here, however, the flute maker put in the extra effort of hollowing out an
ivory rod.
