This model shows the various areas of the 34-ha “Botanical Plant Blankenfelde”, which had been legally owned by Humboldt-Universität since 1977. The aim was to develop the site into a scientific botanical complex, while also – as is usual in Botanical Gardens – the pleasure should not be missed. The model illustrates that the “world” according to East German views was now including more central and south-eastern European regions. Over the years that followed, the “Tropenhaus” (tropical house) and a “South-eastern European forest” both became key features of the complex. This demonstrates how closely the act of collating and cultivating botanical collections ties in with the political trade and power relationships existing at a given time.
