In 1900 Emilie Snethlage from Brandenburg was one of the first women to attend lectures at the Berlin University, today’s Humboldt-Universität. She received her doctorate in Freiburg in 1904 and became an ornithologist. In 1909 she was the first western scientist to travel to the Curuá River in the Brazilian Amazon. Led by seven Kuruaya members, she then hiked to the Jamanxim River. The group reached their destination after a strenuous 26-day march. Snethlage returned to the Curuá in 1914 and acquired 137 objects from the Kuruaya and Xipaya, including jewelry made from glass beads. Two bracelets can be seen in the photographs. Snethlage’s collection is kept at the Ethnologisches Museum Berlin.
