Most of the objects collected in New Ireland were masks. To this day, tatanua masks feature in ceremonies honouring the dead (malanggan) and are not destroyed afterwards. During a malanggan ceremony the heavy, wooden matua masks are worn standing. They are used to lift taboos imposed after a person's death. Lighter kepong masks are made anew for non-religious performances and represent bush spirits.
