The Palace of the Republic was closed in 1990 because of asbestos contamination. After this health hazard had been removed, the initiative Zwischenpalastnutzung (Interim Use of the Palace) staged a successful campaign to use the gutted building for cultural purposes. From 2003 to 2005, some 900 events were staged there, attracting almost 500,000 visitors. Under the title Volkspalast (People's Palace), forms of democratic appropriation and ideas for the building's future use were tried out. Particularly spectacular was a project by Lars Ø. Ramberg, who mounted the word Zweifel (doubt) in huge letters on the roof. The final demolition of the Palace of the Republic began in 2006 and was concluded in 2008.
