The play “And the Dogs were Silent” is one of Césaire’s best known works. It deals with the uprising of Black slaves against colonial landowners. Césaire allows Jahn not only to translate the dramatic poem for a German audience, but also to rearrange it. He approves of Jahn’s musical suggestion – “Le style spiritual” – and explains a newly inserted scene in the play: “I’m adding another extremely topical aspect: a kind of discussion about colonialism – from the perspective both of the colonial master and the person colonised.” Césaire continues: “I can’t thank you enough for all the efforts you’ve made in realising this play, into which I’ve expended so much of myself and my problems.”
