The use of ivory as a surface to be painted on dates back to antiquity; in Europe it was a common material for portrait miniatures from the 18th century onward. Mythological scenes like the encounter between Mars and Venus portrayed here – which strives for a monumental effect despite the small format – are more of an exception.
