“Heavenly couples” (mithuna), who are sometimes shown in physical union, are one of the classical themes of Indian art. The depiction of the lovers was a very popular sculptural motif on temple facades and in ivory carvings for jewellery boxes or fittings on furniture. The union of the lovers is both an act of physical pleasure and a symbol of the harmonious union of opposites on a spiritual level.
