The two human figures from Cameroon most probably came to the Museum für Völkerkunde zu Berlin (now the Ethnologisches Museum) in 1911 as colonial plunder. The then head of the Africa section, Bernhard Ankermann,
assumed that the ivory pair had once been worn on the sash of a king or prince. No further research has since been conducted into the original function of the figures.
