When Joachim II entered a jousting tournament, horse and rider were protected by intricately wrought armour. On festive occasions in the sixteenth century, elaborate mounted contests were held on Schlossplatz. The oldest surviving view of the Berlin Palace, which shows curious spectators at all the windows, dates back to one such occasion in 1592. Today, only the shape of this round oriel is a reminder that Berlin once boasted a magnificent Renaissance palace. Joachim II built it from 1538 onwards modelled on Torgau Palace, which was owned by his kinsmen in Saxony.
