In Berlin, these years stand for revolutions – for the first moves toward democracy, combined with moments of defeat. 1953 and 1968 were also key periods when oppositional groups in Berlin questioned how society was organized. All these events were closely connected with movements in Europe and worldwide. Revolutions occur in times of great discontent and cause radical change in societies. But they do not always lead to freedom and equality.
