After the end of the monarchy in 1918, the palace was rented out to museums as well as artistic, social and scientific institutions. The Gestaltpsychologisches Institut, a Berlin University institute dedicated to gestalt psychology, was also based here from 1920 onwards. Among its groundbreaking investigations were the ganzfeld experiments, which scientists used to explore principles of visual perception. The institute also
housed the Berliner Phonogramm-Archiv (Berlin Phonogram Archive), which had been established in 1900 as a collection of sound recordings from around the world. Today this archive is part of the Ethnologisches Museum in the Humboldt Forum.
