Announcements everywhere
The new press freedom in 1848 turned the city into a communication hub. Posters brought all kinds of messages to thousands of readers. Notices hung everywhere on fences and buildings.
This led to a political battle of words: The king appealed to "my dear Berliners", while shipping canal workers called on the "citizens of Berlin", and Potsdam soldiers spoke of "our enemies, the democrats".
The rash of posters inspired Ernst Litfaß in 1854 to invent the advertising pillars named after him. They are still a striking feature of Berlin's urban landscape.
