The works displayed here were made by contemporary
artists from different First Nations. All of their
works refer to their own cultures as well as the cedar
tree. This can be seen in the choice of materials,
their formal vocabularies, or in the motifs selected.
The artists combined the stylistic features and
practices of their own cultures — historical as well
as contemporary — with those of other cultures.
Despite having an intimate sense of their own history,
the artists represented here offer personal interpretations
of traditional narratives and each employs
traditional techniques in his or her own way.
