Beaver hair is a good material for felting, so it was used to make especially durable hats. The hats were made out of the back or abdominal hair of beavers. Beaver hats (sometimes also known as castor hats from the Latin word for beaver) were classified as either whole, demi- or quarter castors, depending on the proportion of beaver hair used to make the felt. A whole beaver hat was extremely valuable. The long top layer of beaver hair served as a material for socks, gloves, and soft hats.
