In the mid-19th century easily transportable pole
models were highly sought after by collectors,
museums, and World’s Fairs. Some were made
of wood, others of argillite, a black slate. The
iconography of the model poles often resembled
that of the real objects, but they were not oneto-
one reproductions. In principle these models
helped to preserve traditional forms and visual
language — despite the prohibition on First
Nations culture — and to pass them on to the
next generation.
