The carving of canoes was another practice
banned by the Indian Act, which prohibited the
production of traditional objects out of cedar,
including canoes. Like the crest poles, many
models of canoes sold well. Although
government officials and the clergy outlawed the
use of canoes, poles, and ceremonial objects,
they often traded privately in objects they had
confiscated or bought up.
