Senghor announced the next “Congrès de la Société Africaine de Culture” (Congress of the African Society of Culture) – to be held in Rome in September 1958, which, however, was not opened until March 1959. He also mentions the “Black Orpheus” magazine: “I received the first edition of ‘Black Orpheus’, which I found extremely noteworthy. For such a literary undertaking is quite rare in the English-speaking countries of Africa, where more emphasis is placed on politics and economics than on literature”. “Black Orpheus”, founded in 1957 in Nigeria, was the first African literary and cultural magazine.
