Around the world, wars force people to leave their homes. Most flee to other parts of the same country or continent. They embark on perilous journeys to escape violence, destruction and mortal danger to themselves and their loved ones.
Zoya Mahfoud, a Syrian journalist, spoke with ten refugees about how they fled and what it was like to arrive in Berlin. The photographer Benny Golm took these pictures. The interviews reflect events and experiences from 1945 to the present.
Like the people she interviewed, Zoya Mahfoud herself sought refuge and a new home here in Berlin. These stories about leaving home, and about what happened along the way, are very different. Yet all of them tell of fear, loss and pain.
