The shawls known as tsüngkotepsü were formerly reserved for successful headhunters. The central band shows a tiger, the mithun (buffalo), a rooster or hornbill, and the sun, moon, and stars. Today the Ao wear these shawls to express their cultural self-confidence. The shawls are also frequently worn to religious services.
