The bishop’s staff is used in many Christian denominations. It recalls the long, hooked sticks called crooks that shepherds used to catch their sheep. Bishops’ staffs were often made of valuable materials to underline the authority of their bearers. The one you see here was compulsorily purchased for a fixed price in 1939 and designated to be an exhibit in the planned “Führermuseum” for Adolf Hitler in Linz; it was returned to the Netherlands after the war.
