The spontaneous reaction to this large projection of a shoal of fish that is already visible from the staircase may well be plain and simple amazement: It is a piece of art that has “come to life” thanks to sophisticated technology.
The shoal reacts to the audience. Depending on their number and behaviour, visitors act as “confounding factors” and cause different reactions of the shoal: Turbulence, changes of direction, tighter or looser formation. The visitors can also become part of the shoal by integrating themselves in the shoal through a change of behaviour.
Initially, this is a playful way to show that we are tightly connected to our environment and that our behaviour – individually or as collective – has an impact. After all, “everything is interconnectedness”, as Alexander von Humboldt used to write.
