In 1918, Germany’s defeat in World War I marked the end of the Hohenzollern monarchy. For 500 years they had ruled asprince electors, kings and Kaisers. In the course of the revolution Wilhelm II went into exile. Household goods and artworks from the palaces were packed in boxes such as these and transported to Huis Doorn in sixtythree railway carriages. Employees of the court also had to vacate the palace. Research institutes and museums moved in, as well as a hall of residence for women students and the Notküche für Gebildete, a soup kitchen for educated people.
