These pictures show various representations of a highly iconic event: Karl Liebknecht declaring the socialist republic on 9 November 1918 in front of the residence of the Hohenzollern monarchy. But accounts of precisely what happened are contradictory. In 1923, Rudolf von Neumann drew the politician speaking to the masses from the roof of a car. Decades later, Georg Schlicht shifted the events to the palace terrace. In 1953, commissioned by the state, he painted Liebknecht on the balcony of Gate 5. Finally, in 1964, Gate 4 was integrated into the East German Staatsratsgebäude (State Council building) as a reminder of Karl Liebknecht's speech.
