This section of the exhibition focuses on three historical archives of the Humboldt-Universität. It shows different representations of the “Self” and the “Other”. In each case, two collections are juxtaposed:
— the Janheinz Jahn Archive with documents on neo-African literature and the Lautarchiv (Sound Archive) with voice recordings of prisoners-of-war from both World Wars;
— on the other hand, the Lautarchiv with historical German dialect recordings and the Hahne Niehoff Archive with historical ethnographic photographies.
Studying the scientific practices of collecting also reveals social and political contexts. Empty spaces in the archives emerge. The acoustic, written and visual documents presented here also form a historical in-depth study space on current themes discussed on the Research Wall.
