Most objects in this area come from the collections of the Humboldt University or other universities. Their presentation in hanging showcases is to remind us of cabinets of art and curiosities, the principle of which included marvelling at and associatively linking dissimilar things. The Berlin University received its first objects from the princely collection of the House of Hohenzollern.
Almost all the exhibits are from teaching or research contexts. They are valuable due to the questions they give rise to, and the insights and answers they pro vide. They stand both for university multitude and the permanence of major themes.
The exhibition approaches its exhibits via terms, which the »Contestations of the Liberal Script« Cluster of Excellence uses as a methodological approach. These terms are also reflected in the scientific discourse depicted by the kinetic staging on the wall of this room: they are borders, orders, visibility and temporality – concepts, that may seem solid, but are in fact impermanent.
