Relief from the foyer of the Volkskammer in the Palace of the Republic

This is a segment of a four-sided bronze relief, which stood in the foyer of the Volkskammer, the East German parliament. It was originally more than fourteen metres long. Commissioned by the Ministry of Culture, the artwork had an explicit ideological message. It sought to portray the evolution of humanity as striving to achieve a communist society following exploitation, oppression and class struggle. Jo Jastram based his work on Bertolt Brecht's poems In Praise of Communism and In Praise of Learning. When it was dismantled in 1998, the relief was cut into forty-three pieces.
