These shards showing portraits of rulers were used in Renaissance-era tiled stoves that were destroyed during construction work in the early seventeenth century. The tiles reflect the political and religious convictions of the lords of the palace. The people portrayed were probably royal supporters of Protestantism. The prince electors of Brandenburg were also Protestants from 1539 onwards.
