This relief of a falling warrior was part of a cavalry battle scene. It originally adorned the southeastern gateway that dominated the Palace Square (Schlossplatz) and celebrated the king as a victorious ruler. The prominent position of this relief, as well as the high quality of the work, capturing the vanquished warrior's strength and dynamism, suggests that the master builder and sculptor Andreas Schlüter probably not only designed the piece, but also personally carved it in stone.
