Larger-than-life eagles decorated the exterior facade of the uppermost storey. The eagle is not only the heraldic animal of the Electorate of Brandenburg and the Kingdom of Prussia, but also the symbol of the god Jupiter. In the iconographic programme of the palace, the father of the gods in Roman mythology symbolized the power and status of the ruler. When Prince Elector Frederick III crowned himself as King Frederick I, he symbolically ascended like Jupiter to the realm of the gods.
