Tamed
The shaggy hair and walrus moustache, the bushy eyebrows and coarse features all identify these figures as “wild men”: halfhuman creatures from the world of early medieval folk belief. The faces served as ornaments on ledges in Andreas Schlüter's Small Palace Courtyard (Kleiner Schlosshof). They represented primeval forces that had been tamed by the king's power and now had to support his endeavours.
