Ideal
These two women, one with a lion and club and the other with scales and sword, represent strength and justice. These are two virtues that a Christian ruler was supposed to possess. The right to rule was his by birth. No constitution could limit his actions. His contemporaries believed that he only had to answer to God. Yet they also thought that he would only fulfil his duties as a ruler if his actions were proportionate, wise, strong and just. And so this was exactly how Friedrich I wished to portray himself. It was no coincidence that these two virtues decorated the facade to the building housing his throne room.
